Cognitive skills (def.) Thinking, reasoning, and other intellectual abilities; how the brain thinks; the scope of activities that encompasses thinking, such as recall, inferring, generalizing, planning, deciding, analysing etc.; thinking abilities, often represented by IQ scores.
Social skills (def.) Appropriate behavior for social settings where we interact/cope with others; since attitudes (one’s thoughts and feelings) drive behavior, appropriate social behavior requires developing appropriate attitudes (cognition);

Universal, Selective, and Indicated Intervention Programs.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) prevention classification scheme is helpful in delineating target populations and understanding the differing objectives of various interventions. The IOM system classifies prevention interventions into three categories—universal, selective, and indicated. Definitions of the three categories are below.

Universal

Universal preventive interventions are activities targeted to the General public or a whole population group that has not been identified on the basis of individual risk.

Selective

Selective preventive interventions are activities targeted to individuals or a subgroup of the population whose risk of developing a disorder is significantly higher than average (i.e. At-Risk).

Indicated

Indicated preventive interventions are activities targeted to individuals in High-Risk environments, identified as having minimal but detectable signs or symptoms foreshadowing disorder or having biological markers indicating predisposition for disorder but not yet meeting diagnostic levels.
